P6-M marijuana plants uprooted

CAMP BGEN OSCAR FLORENDO – A total of 30,000 fully-grown marijuana plants worth P6 million were uprooted and burned by police and local officials on Dec. 6 in Sitio  Bay-O, Sabsaba, Santol, La Union.

PCSupt. Leopoldo N Bataoil, Director of Police Regional Office I, La Union Governor Victor Ortega, Col. Loreto Rirao of the 503rd Army Infantry Brigade and PSSupt Franklin Bucayu, La Union Police Director, Mayor Floresto Sayangda and several mediamen personally went to the area to destroy the plants.

Bataoil said the marijuana were planted  in more than two hectares of forested area in Sitio Bay-o, believed to be the production base of the New People’s Army.

He said that the 3-day uprooting operations were conducted by the joint operatives of the Regional Mobile Group led by PSupt. Dionicio Borromeo, the Regional Anti-Illegal Drug Special Operations Task Force, the La Union Provincial Mobile Group, and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

The police and local officials urged the residents to stop planting marijuana and instead look for alternative crops as a source of income.

The PROI also gave toys for 60 children of Bay-O Elementary School.
