P98-M worth of marijuana plants burned

SAN FERNANDO CITY – The Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) here burned P98-million worth of marijuana plants and seedlings uprooted in 13 sites in Ilocos Sur and La Union last year and in March and November this year.

PCSupt Leopoldo Bataoil, Regional Director of PROI said the marijuana plants were uprooted in four separate operations by the operatives of Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Group I (RAIDSOTG 1), Regional Intelligence and Investigation Division (RIID), Regional Mobile Group 1, Provincial Mobile Group of La Union and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) from February 2005 to November 2006.

Last Nov. 8-10 this year, 20,000 fully grown marijuana plants with an estimated value of P4 million were uprooted in several rice fields in Sitio Kalipayan, Barangay Badeo, Kibungan, Benguet and Barangay Licungan, Sugpon, Ilocos Sur.

Last March 3, the operatives uprooted 100,000 fully grown marijuana plants worth about P20 million in Sugpon, Ilocos Sur.

On February 19-22 and November 17-19 last year, operatives destroyed 370,000 fully grown marijuana plants with a value of P74 million; 170,000 marijuana plants with a value of P34 million were uprooted in a 1.2 hectare plantation in Sitio Inasan, Tubaday, Santol, La Union while 200,000 marijuana plants estimated at P40 million were uprooted in a 14,000 square meter plantation in Sitio Nakneng, Sugpon, Ilocos Sur.

Bataoil said the successful operations were the the result of the intensification of the PNP campaign against illegal drugs in the region.
