Pangasinan’s Bikers Den lures biking enthusiasts

SAN FABIAN, Pangasinan — Bikers and bike lovers from Pangasinan and its neighboring provinces gathered in Brgy. Inmalog in San Fabian town for one strenuous activity close to their hearts — BIKING!

A world-class Bikers Den was constructed in this upland barangay and several bikers’ trails were mapped out to boost tourism, empower the youth and encourage sports in the area.

Representative Christopher De Venecia of Pangasinan’s Fourth Congressional District led the inauguration of the colorful, 220-square kilometer den.

The spacious, relaxing area comes complete with comfort rooms and parking spaces for bicycles.

Tables and chairs also come in handy for the weary sportsmen and travelers.

De Venecia said the area has been a mountain biker’s refuge and the government stepped in to amplify the natural resources in the area by bringing in a fresh attraction, tourist-friendly and income-generating structure.

“We have turned-over this structure to the biker’s organization and we actually encourage them to look into revenue-generating activities like a cafe or spa where bikers can relax,” De Venecia said.

San Fabian Vice-Mayor Marinor De Guzman said her town is blessed to have this new tourist attraction that offers 15 different bike trails for beginners and even professional bikers.

Three-time national cycling tour champion Jess Garcia, who hails from Pangasinan, graced the ceremony and witnessed the bike race that spanned 13 kilometers covering four barangays of San Fabian.

Spending 32 years in cycling, Garcia said biking is the most strenuous and hazardous sport.

“Sa isang 21-day cycling tour, imagine a cyclist would be in the streets for 21 days, no substitution, no-time-out, kalaban ang init ng araw, ang ulan, uhaw, gutom, undisciplined motorists at may mga stray animals pa na haharang at bigla kang sesemplang,”Garcia explained.

A good quality mountain or racing bicycle, he said, can cost around P350,000 to P750,000.

He, however, posted a positive note that mountain biking, not just racer biking, can be given equal importance.

“I believe we can excel in this sport. May this mountain biking race be the start na mapansin naman ang mountain bike not just the racer bike, dahil ang mountain bike race ay dapat talaga nasa mountain,” he quipped.

Some 160 bikers from Pangasinan, Ilocos, La Union and Zambales participated in the race divided into several categories namely beginners, ladies, senior citizens and professional-elite.
