PAYDAY GROCERY SHOPPING OR PANIC BUYING?

PAYDAY GROCERY SHOPPING OR PANIC BUYING? A day after President Rodrigo Duterte announced the lockdown of Metro Manila to help abate the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019, long lines of shoppers formed at the cashiers of a popular supermarket in Vigan City as buyers started stocking up on supplies. Shelves were emptied of all kinds of alcohol and people were seen buying items in bulk, such as sacks of rice, boxes of sardines, gallons of disinfectants, bags of instant noodles, and other household items leading one observer to quip if it was payday or has panic buying finally reached Ilocos. Malacañang last week called on the public to buy only what they need and warned that hoarding would only increase the prices of necessities and disadvantage the poor. (photo by Jasper Allibang Espejo)
