LAOAG CITY – The provincial government here has launched on September 9, 2016 a fare discount exclusively for students to lessen their traveling expenses from their homes to the university centers.
“This is a program providing shuttle service at 50% fare discount to our students from the other LGUs in going to Laoag City and Batac City, kasi nandito sa dalawang siyudad ang mga eskwelahan natin,” Cipriano Hilarion Martinez, Metro Ilocos Norte Council (MINC) and Ilocos Norte Youth Office (INYO) consultant said.
With the said project, Governor Imee Marcos said that Ilocano students are provided with a more convenient and a cheaper way to pursue their education.
The Sirib buses and jeepneys, bearing logos of Sirib, PGIN and MINC, operate from Mondays to Fridays and require only the students to wear their school IDs to avail of the discount.
Routes include Bacarra-Pasuquin-Burgos in the north, San Nicolas-Batac and Suba-Paoay in the south, and Sarrat-Dingras-Marcos-Banna- Nueva Era in the east. Signages are put in designated bus stops in each municipality.
The Laoag City Centennial Arena parking lot will serve as the terminal for the shuttle buses and jeepneys for the students to ride in returning to their towns in the afternoon.
“The service is a big help to me because my original expenses from Solsona to Batac City costs P60.00. With the 50% discount, I only pay P30.00,” Rolyn Aguinaldo of Solsona town said.
“The 50% discount can help us save more. I can use the money to pay for miscellaneous fees at school,” Dick Edward Calma of Bacarra town, said.
Meanwhile, Vanessa Mae Palalay of Burgos town thanked Governor Marcos for providing cheap transportation to students.
“Aside from reducing our fares, riding in the Sirib bus helps us to be more sociable and meet new friends,” she said. (From a report of Jennifer T. Pambid, PGIN-CMO)
