Poe warns PH will be worse off under a dictatorship

Sen. Grace Poe warned Filipinos against electing a president who will become a dictator, saying the promised quick fix to the country’s problems is not worth losing hard-won democratic rights.

Poe, the adopted daughter of movie icons Fernando Poe Jr. and Susan Roces, and the first foundling to run for president of the Philippines, who has made all efforts throughout the campaign not to speak ill of her rivals, said she just had to come out and appeal to Filipinos to think very hard about choosing someone who has all the makings of a dictator.

For all failures of the current administration, which she called out for often turning a deaf ear to the cries of ordinary Filipinos, Poe said the country would be worse off if it is under a dictatorship.

“Totoo marami pa tayong pagkukulang at lalung-lalo na nakakadismaya ang ating gobyerno. Pero ang pinaka nakakatakot sa lahat ay ang isang gobyerno na didiktahan tayo, na matatakot tayo,” she said.

While she has had a peaceful relationship with other presidential candidates, including Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who she finds funny at times, Poe said the country’s future under a dictator is no laughing matter.

Nakakabahala,” she said.

The senator said any peace that may be achieved through violent means was superficial.

Lalung lalo na, may oras pa tayong pumili,” she said in an interview with Bombo Radyo.

Duterte, she pointed out, would not tolerate a healthy and democratic discourse in his government.
