SUGPON, Ilocos Sur -Police operatives swooped down on several marijuana plantations in Barangay Licungan here and uprooted and burned around 185,000 marijuana plants worth more than P36-M as the Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 1 (PDEA1) stepped up their campaign to locate and destroy the sources of illegal drugs across the region.
Police Chief Superintendent Ricardo C. Marquez, Regional Director of PRO1, said the operatives from Regional Intelligence Division of PRO1 (RID-PRO1); Regional Public Safety Battalion 1 (RPSB1); Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 1 (PDEA1) and the Sugpon Police Station uprooted and burned about 185,000 fully grown marijuana plants, 5,000 MJ seedlings and an estimated 400 grams MJ seeds planted in fourteen scattered plantation sites with an estimated land area of 48,000 square meters.
“Based on the standard value set by the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB), the uprooted MJ plants and destroyed MJ seedlings had an estimated value of P36.7 million,” Marquez added.
Police Superintendent Jonathan Cabal, RID Deputy Chief and team leader, said the plantations were located mostly in the mountainous parts of Barangay Licungan and some of the marijuana plants were inter-cropped with vegetables, ginger, and corn plants to prevent their immediate detection.
The uprooted MJ plants were burned at the plantation sites in the presence of barangay officials and members of the media while samples were brought to PRO1 for documentation.
The regional director stressed that the PPO would continue to conduct intensified series of anti-illegal drugs operations not only in the tri-boundaries, but all over the region to ensure the reduction of supply and demand of illegal drugs especially marijuana.
This was the second marijuana eradication operation conducted by police operatives in less than two months.
Last October, P5 million worth of MJ plants were uprooted and burned by the Ilocos Sur police and PDEA1 operatives in 9 plantation sites located in Mount Ibaoan, Mt. Agay, Mt Caang and Mt. Baeng all in Licungan of Sugpon town.#
