Policewoman photographed carrying a woman on her back, cited during 113th Police Service Anniversary

CAMP BGEN OSCAR M. FLORENDO, SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – A policewoman who was photographed carrying a blind woman on her back was among those recognized during the commemoration of the 113th Police Service Anniversary held at the Police Regional Office 1 grandstand here August 14.

PRO1 Regional Director Police Chief Superintendent Roman A. Felix conferred the Medalya ng Papuri to SPO3 Erlinda B. Gagaoin for her act of compassion to an old and blind woman that went viral on the social media and earned praises from the community and netizens.

The picture of SPO3 Gagaoin, Head of Women and Children’s Protection Desk in Tubao, La Union, carrying Rebecca Bataler, a blind woman, on her back to bring her back home has elicited more than 43,000 likes on Facebook and with thousands of positive comments and shares.

Felix relayed the news that Presidente Benigno S. Aquino III praised Gagaoin for her good deed during the 113th Police Service Anniversary celebration held in Camp Crame on Monday.

“The President learned about the good deed of SPO3 Gagaoin and he mentioned her in his speech in Camp Crame,” Felix said.

Meanwhile, the regional director also recognized Police Senior Supt. Nestor E. Felix and Police Supt. Julius C. Suriben for being adjudged as Best Police Commissioned Officers (PCOs) in the field of administration and intelligence respectively for calendar year 2013 in a nationwide search conducted by the PNP Headquarters in Camp Crame.

Felix and Suriben were also the recipients of the same award in the regional level.

Felix said the awards should serve as an inspiration for police officers and personnel to reach a higher standard of police service.

“Ang mga parangal na inyong natanggap ay sumasagisag sa kasipagan at dedikasyon ninyo sa paglilingkod sa publiko. Sa inyong lahat, tanggapin ninyo ang aking taus-pusong pagbati at pasasalamat,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of cooperation and partnership with the community in crime prevention, development and in nation-building.

“This year’s anniversary theme: Pulisya- Kaagapay ang Mamamayan para sa Patuloy na Kayapaan at Kaunlaran bespeaks of this truth at hindi maikakaila na kailangan tayo ng sambayanan pero mas higit natin silang kailangan. Higit na mahalaga ang suporta at tiwala nila sa atin para matiyak na makamit natin ang kapayapaan at sa kalauna’y kaunlaran ng ating bayan,” he said.

“Pakatandaan natin na tayo ay mga pulis, sa diwa, sa puso at sa gawa. At dahil tayo ay mga pulis dapat ay alam natin ang ating tungkulin at ito ay ang pagsugpo at paglutas ng krimen. Dapat ay gampanan natin ang ating tungkulin at higit sa lahat dapat ay mahalin natin ang ating tungkulin,” he said.
