Provincial nutrition committee mulls creation of monitor group to promote breast feeding

LAOAG CITY – The provincial nutrition committee (PNC) of Ilocos Norte mulls the creation of a monitoring group to promote breast feeding in the villages.

To be called the “breast feeding support group,” the members will encourage and assist mothers to breast feed their babies within a period of 0-6 months up to 2 years.

Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Elma Irapta said the group will be composed of barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), barangay health workers (BHW); barangay officials and volunteer mothers.

“First milk or the so called “colostrum” from the mother is the most nutritious food for a baby and a protection from any disease infection,” she said.

The primarily responsibility of a breast feeding group member is to orient the mothers about the importance of breast feeding for the baby’s health and resistance, she said.

“The member will strictly monitor if the mother has breastfed her baby. If not, they will find remedies to convince the mother to observe breast feeding,” she said.

To strengthen the knowledge in sustaining healthy babies, the provincial nutrition committee conducted recently an orientation on infant feeding during emergency situations as part of the highlights for the celebration of the national nutrition month celebration last July with a theme: “Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyo Agapan!.

Irapta said the committee has started encouraging government and private offices to establish breast feeding rooms for working mothers pursuant to the Expanded Breastfeeding Act of 2010 (Republic Act No. 10028).#
