VIGAN CITY — The Philippine Science High School – Ilocos Region Campus (PSHS-IRC) manufactured alcohol and personal protective equipment (PPE) to aid frontliners in Ilocos Sur and neighboring provinces in the fight against the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
This was done under the “PisAYUDA: Siyensiya Para sa Bayan” project of the PSHS System initiated in response to the public health emergency.
Using the meager raw materials available in the laboratory, the PSHS-IRC was able to produce twenty liters of alcohol which were distributed to the Municipal Health Office (MHO) in San Ildefonso, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), Magsingal District Hospital, Ilocos Sur Provincial Hospital-Gabriela Silang and CDRRMO in Vigan City, to barangay Poblacion East in San Ildefonso, and to the Rural Health Units in Sto Domingo and Tagudin.
The PSHS-IRC faculty and staff, led by Campus Director Dr. Ronnalee Orteza, spent two weeks in the school’s fabrication laboratory assembling around 3,700 face shields, 20 aerosol boxes, and several triage chambers. The raw materials needed to produce the equipment were augmented by donations from various individuals, agencies and organizations.
The manufactured protective and medical equipment were eventually distributed to the frontliners of various agencies, hospitals and barangays in Ilocos Sur; the PDRRMOs in Pangasinan, Laoag City General Hospital; Currimao Philippine National Police (PNP); Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital; Governor Roque Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital; PDRRMO and PNP in Ilocos Norte; Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Regional Office 1; Department of Health (DOH) – Region 1; Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center; Landbank of the Philippines – San Fernando City; and Lorma Medical Center, PNP and DOH in La Union.
Dr. Orteza extended her gratitude to those who helped make the project possible. “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the generous donors especially the PSHS-IRC Parents-Teachers Association for their utmost support on this project PisAYUDA: Siyensiya Para sa Bayan. With your full support, we were able to distribute alcohol, aerosol boxes, face shields and triage chambers for our frontliners. We were not be able to distribute 3,700 face shields, one triage chamber, and 20 aerosol boxes if we did not receive your overwhelming support. I hope you will continuously support our institution in this cause,” she said in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency Ilocos Sur.
In a post in social media, the school further thanked the faculty and staff who volunteered to make the PPE, those who donated food for the volunteers, DOST Provincial Science and Technology Center Ilocos Norte, DOST Region 1, Department of Trade and Industry – Ilocos Sur and the donors of cash and materials.
