VIGAN CITY – The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) appealed to Ilocanos to donate more blood to add up to the province’s supply and help save lives.
“Accidents always happen, and this is the season when there are large cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever, so we need more blood donors,” said Raymund Mario Chan, head of the Philippine Red Cross in the province in a local radio interview.
Chan urged residents to go to PRC in this city to donate blood upon making the proper preparations. He said a donor must have enough rest and sleep, have not drank alcohol or medicines 24 hours before blood donation, must have eaten and have drank plenty of water or juice.
Donors must at least be 16-65 years old but they must be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, with blood pressure between systolic: 90-160 mmHg, diastolic:60-100 mmHg, and must pass the evaluation of his or her physical and health history.
Chan said that the process of blood donation include the taking of the donor’s weight, honestly answering the registration form, checking of blood type and hemoglobin, blood donor examination, the actual donation for 10 minutes or less, 5-10 minute rest and fluid intake.
After donation, donors must avoid the following: stooping down, driving big vehicles, operating big machines, using the punctured arm in lifting heavy objects, applying pressure on the punctured side and lifting arm when bleeding. When dizzy, one must lie down with both feet elevated. Drinking lots of juice is also advisable.
Meanwhile, Chan thanked the top blood donors in the province who were given due recognition during the World Blood Donors Month celebration in July at the Ilocos Sur National High School in this city.
