Vigan City, Ilocos Sur – The LUPang Ilocos Barangay Nutrition Scholars Federation Inc. (LUPangIlocos Fed., Inc.) together with the National Nutrition Council Regional Office 1 (NNC-RO1) held the 8th Regional Conference of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in Vigan Convention Center, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur last October 9-10, 2018 with the theme: “BNS: Bayani ng Nutrisyon, Noon, Ngayon at Bukas!”
The successful event was attended by around 1,700 participants composed of BNSs, D/CNPCs and guest from the 4 provinces in the region.
Dir. Valeriano Jesus V. Lopez of DOH-Regional Office 1 represented by ARD Edwin Sanchez graced the event as keynote speaker. He congratulated the federation and NNC-RO1 for organizing the event.
“Being a BNS is not a joke, nor a past time, it is a serious responsibility on how you can make nutrition a champion in your respective area,” he stated.
He also stressed the importance of the First 1000 days of a child, Nutritional Guidelines and Pinggang Pinoy. He concluded his message with the acronym BIDA which means “B-uilder of linkages, I-nspiration to everyone, D-etermined and A-ction oriented.”
The topics discussed during the event were Overview on How to Accomplish Individual BNS Conference Action Plan, Role of BNS in the PPAN 2017-2022, Personality Development, Acute Malnutrition-Demonstration of Proper Weight and Height Measurement and Demonstration of Nutrition Assessment using Mid-Upper Arm Circumference, Wastong Nutrisyon: Alamin, Gawin at Palaganapin, Updated Implementing Guidelines and Medical and Survivorship Assistance Availment of NNC Traveling Allowance.
The BNSs also showcased their talents for the coronation for 2018 Mutya ng BNS and BNS Festival of Talents on the second day. Ms. Jennifer Caluag from La Union was crowned as 2018 Mutya ng BNS, Mr. Joel Jaramillo from Ilocos Sur as First Princess, Ms. Elizabeth Oligar from Pangasinan as Second Princess, and Neva Jane Coloma from Ilocos Norte as Third Princess.
All the provinces showed their best performance during the Festival of Talents. BNSs from Ilocos Norte won the contest while Ms. Mara Molina of Malasique, Pangasinan was adjudged as the best performer.
During the general assembly, Ms. Nory Estoesta, Regional BNS President of the LUPang Ilocos reported the different activities of the federations for the year while Ms. Josephine Ganuelas, Regional BNS Treasurer reported their financial status. While Ms. Widna Galuardo, Regional BNS Auditor presented the synthesis of the 2- day activity and encouraged everyone to be BRAVE, B-eing, R-esponsible, and A-ctive E-veryday. NPC Ma. Eileen Blanco thanked everyone for the successful event.
This conference aims to update and capacitate the BNSs on how to manage efficiently and effectively the nutrition programs in their respective areas and will definitely contribute to the set goals of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2022. CPF
