Research and development center to be established in Ilocos Sur: DOST Usec for Regional Operation

CANDON CITY – The Undersecretary for Regional Operation of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano said that the DOST is already working for the establishment of Research and Development Centers in Ilocos Sur where scientists, researchers, and inventors can work together.

This facility supports the aim of making Ilocos Sur as “The home of the Great Inventors” as envisioned by the Ilocos Sur Governor, Hon. Ryan Luis V. Singson during the RSTW press conference held at the Center for Culture and Arts in Candon City, Ilocos Sur last October 3, 2017.

Candon City Mayor Ericson G. Singson also assured that the Candon City Science and Technology Coordinating Council (MSTCC) will coordinate with the Department of Education (DepEd) and DOST to look for students who are skilled in science and mathematics and can qualify in the city’s scholarship program.

The concern on the poor access of weather information from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather station in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, especially during typhoons was raised. Dr. Armando Q. Ganal said that this problem is due to the communication line which has been an unresolved issue but he assured that the concerned offices and authorities are finding solutions for this problem. Usec. Manzano also stated that there is a need to clarify and verify the problem first, but the DOST has the need to fix it, if the problem is within the responsibility of the department.

Director of DOST Region 2, Dr. Sancho Mabborang also introduced the Onestore hub, an online marketing facility for the products of Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) enrolled in the DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), as well as the products developed by Filipino inventors. According to Director Mabborang, the facility aimed to promote products of MSMEs and local inventors within and outside the country and has already reached Php45 million sales and 8 million visitors since January.

There are many concerns challenging development in Candon City and Ilocos Sur as a whole but the DOST and LGUs are confident to join efforts to bring desirable change in the province. (Florde Liza L. Alida, Project Assistant I)
