LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – A farmer’s burning of rice hays at the field of Barangay Masupe, Balaoan, La Union, has caused the sudden power outage in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra and parts of La Union last Monday morning.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) monitored the loss of power in the four provinces at 9:07AM on Monday. However, the power supply was restored at 10:08AM on the same day through the immediate actions made by the personnel of the NGCP’s North Luzon operation and system unit.

NGCP’s North Luzon Corporate Communications Officer Lilibeth P. Gaydowen said their field technicians discovered that the burning of rice hays was done directly under the NGCP’s transmission lines.
“Our technical men found the burning hays along the field in Balaoan, La Union during their immediate inspection of transmission lines upon the shut–off of power supply in the Ilocos,” she said.

“I am appealing to all residents in Ilocos region not to build fire near or under transmission structures as this could cause power interruptions because the fire’s smoke can ionize the air around the energized conductor that may serve as a possible path of current to the ground,” she explained.

With state of the art technology in terms of equipment and processes, she said the NGCP is committed to provide the country with world class transmission services, including the capability for immediate restoration of transmission services during grid disturbance events.#
