Sagada shuts doors to tourists

BAGUIO CITY β€” Sagada town has temporarily shut its doors to tourists and all ecotourism activities in view of the COVID-19 threat.

Through Executive Order 7-29, Sagada town mayor James Pooten Jr. ordered the suspension of all eco-tourism activities within the town until further notice.

Pooten Jr.’s lockdown order against tourists and tourism activities came after different governments around the world, local governments around the country and organizations are on their toes against possible COVID infection.

In Pooten Jr.’s order dated February 13, 2020, he stressed that there is an urgent need to protect Sagada and its residents, being a top tourist destination in North Philippines.

He said the health and safety of everyone is the utmost concern of the LGU because if the virus enters the town, it will affect not only the tourism but will severely disrupt the life of residents.

Earlier, a community meeting, a common practice in Sagada, was attended by the town’s stakeholders to discuss measures on how to combat COVID-19.

Sagada is frequented by tourists because of its unique burial caves, idyllic mountain landscapes and its indigenous culture. It is also a favorite vacation spot for people looking for peace and serenity.
