BANTAY, Ilocos Sur — The COVID alarm is real in Ilocos Sur.
Schools Division Superintendent Jorge Reinante appealed to all the Supreme Student Government (SSG) presidents of the different schools in the province to help in the prevention of spread of the dreaded coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as he spoke during the 2020 election of officers for both advisers’ and student officers’ associations at Bantay East Central School here March 9.
“Yesterday, there were only 6 infections in the country. This morning, I learned there are already 11,” he said.
He urged everyone to get involved in combatting the disease such as frequent washing of hands and avoiding crowded places.
“Everyone should grab at something like handkerchief to cover the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. If you have cough or colds, you should wear a face mask,” he said.
He also said he had to miss a meeting at the DepEd Central Office in Manila because of the COVID-19 scare.
“When you ride on an air-conditioned bus, the risk is great especially when there are passengers with cough and colds. You can just imagine how the virus circulates inside the aircon bus,” he said.
There are already more than 5,000 COVID-19 deaths worldwide and with the imminent spread of COVID-19 in the Philippines, the DepEd has scrapped the scheduled regional athletic meets as well as the 2020 Palarong Pambansa.
As of March 15, news reports say there are already 140 confirmed cases in the country. ●
