Search operation nets firearms, ammo cache

STA. CATALINA, Ilocos Sur – Several guns and ammunitions hidden by unidentified suspects  reportedly out to stop a feast celebration were discovered  by the police while conducting search operations in a barangay here.

A report from the provincial police office said the joint teams of the Special Weapons and Tactics, Vigan City, 103rd Provincial Police Mobile Group and policemen here found a sack containing assorted   firearms and ammunitions hidden in a cornland south of the house of one Johnny Rafanan in Barangay Subec.

An inventory by the police revealed that the sack contained one Colt M16 baby armalite rifle, bearing SN 9066086; 1 Colt M16 infant armalite rifle with the serial number 4888120 tampered; 1 cal .45 pistol 1911 with SN 452629; 1short magazine of cal .45 pistol; 1 magazine pouch; 5 long magazines of cal 5.56; 166 live ammunitions for cal 5.56 and 6 live ammunitions of cal .45 pistol.

Earlier the fiesta celebration and a political rally were abruptly interrupted as alarmed residents and visitors who graced the occasion scampered to safety when the police chased three armed men who tried to mingle with the crowd during the festivities.

An initial report said one of the armed men reportedly entered the house of Rafanan but a search by the pursuing policemen proved negative. Instead, the police discovered a sack containing the said firearms and ammunitions hidden in a cornfield near the house of Rafanan.
