PAGUDPUD, Ilocos Norte – Two endangered dolphins were stranded in the coastal areas of Barangays Balaoi and Pasaleng, both in Pagudpud town recently here.
Jose Morata, the municipal environment and natural resources officer (MENRO), said the dolphins, both “killer whale” specie, were stranded separately in the coastal area of Barangay Balaoi on Monday, June 30 and Barangay Pasaleng on Tuesday, July 1.
The first dolphin, which was rescued by local fishermen, was returned to the sea water few hours after treatment from scratch wound.
The other dolphinwas released immediately to the sea after it was found to be healthy.
According to Provincial Fishery Regulatory Coordinator Arthur Vallente the stranding of dolphins in the beachline happens when dolphins meet several disruptions whether natural or man-made while they are swimming.
He said these disturbances at sea will cause dolphins to lose direction and strand in the beachlines.#
