Stranded giant sperm whale dies from bites, cut

SAN FERNANDO CITY – A giant sperm whale died moments after it was stranded along the shore of Barangay Lingsat here on October 13.

Village officials tried to save the wounded whale but failed as it was already weak from the many cuts and bites it sustained while trying to return to sea.

Henry Canlas, aquaculture technician of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), said the 9.5 meter-long whale was already weak from its wounds when they arrived on the scene.

He said that the body of the mammal was covered with bites and scratches when it was found stranded.

Officials said the cuts came from shark bites while the scratches were from sharp corrals which the mammal sustained while it tried to go back to the sea.

Canlas said the whale could not return to sea after it was stranded due to its weight and injuries. The whale weighed 10 tons.

Authorities buried the mammal near the shore. Two payloaders provided by the provincial government hauled the whale’s carcass from the shore to its grave.

In 2012, a 2.74 meter-whale was also found dead after it got stranded in Barangay Dalumpinas, this city.#
