Suspected gun-for-hire nabbed in Ilocos Norte

CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO — The Ilocos Region police director here today ordered the Ilocos Norte police to conduct an in-depth investigation to dig up any possible connection of an arrested suspected gun-for-hire to the ambush-slay of a mayoralty candidate in Dingras, Ilocos Norte on December 28.

Regional Director Police Chief Supt. Constante Azares Jr. reported that Isaac G. Casay, 39, alias Bigso, married, a suspected gun-for hire was arrested in Barangay Sto. Niño, Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte at about 5 pm on December 30.

The authorities confiscated from Casay a caliber 5.56 baby armalite rifle with defaced serial number.

Barangay Chairwoman Jo-en San Diego, a candidate for councilor, was killed while six persons were wounded in a pre-dawn ambush in Barangay San Esteban, Dingras, Ilocos Norte on December 28.

Wounded were SPO2 Cesar Sabado and Joel Rosqueta, security escort and driver of Ilocos Norte Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Robert Castro, respectively; Sangguniang Bayan Member Jose Mari Genaro Albano; PO1 Joel Natividad Naval; Gaudencio Teodoro; and Fernando Sebastian.

Ilocos Norte Provincial Board Member Castro and Barangay Guerrero Chairman Joeffrey Ponce Saguid were also part of the four-vehicle convoy heading toward Barangay Bagut to attend a Christmas party when they were ambused.

Saguid is running for mayor of Dingras against incumbent Mayor Marineth Gamboa who is seeking reelection.

Azares disclosed that Casay is a principal suspect in two recent murder cases in Ilocos Norte as he vowed to enforce a sustained implementation of the campaign to apprehend wanted persons and the drive against loose firearms in Region 1.

“We will leave no stone unturned and do the best we can to neutralize lawless elements and give justice to the victims and their families,” Azares added.#
