Veggies and fruits protect the body

Do you know that Filipinos, in general, do not eat enough vegetables and fruits?

Results of the National Nutrition Survey by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) showed a decreasing trend in the consumption of vegetables from 1978 to 1993, but with a slight increase in 2008.

For fruits, there was a slight increase in consumption from 1978 to 1987. However, a remarkable decrease was noted in 1987 to 2003, from 107 grams to 54 grams per person.

Increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables may help reduce micronutrient deficiency among Filipinos. Vegetables and fruits contain vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber needed to maintain normal body processes.

Recent studies also suggest eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to reduce the risk of stroke.

So if we want to stay healthy, “five a day” is the key: “five servings of fruits and vegetables a day in a diet!
