Vigan City gets highest national award on nutrition program’s implementation

VIGAN CITY, November 28 (PIA) — This famous world heritage city formally received the highest national award on nutrition program’s implementation for being the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner on Nutrition (CROWN)- City Category in a recently concluded awarding ceremony held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), according to Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina.

Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona handed over the trophy and a check amounting to Php250,000 to Vigan City Councilors Loreto Quibilan and Kristen Figuerres during the awarding ceremony.

Medina said that the latest national prestigious award on nutrition given to Vigan was the result of the all-out cooperation of her constituents, the members of the city nutrition council, the city officials, department heads and the stakeholders in the successful nutrition programs implementation.

“Our all–out efforts to promote proper nutrition among our children started to bear fruit as we bring home the national CROWN award. As a CROWN awardee, our nutrition programs shall be monitored by the National Nutrition Evaluation Team in the next three consecutive years to check whether our efforts to maintain a downward trend of malnutrition are sustained through a well-coordinated plan of implementation,” she said.

“After we earned this prestigious national award on nutrition, we will now embark on maintaining our outstanding performance to win the national nutrition honor award – the national “hall of fame” outstanding award on nutrition,” she added.

The CROWN award is conferred by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) to a town, city or province that has been adjudged by the inter-agency regional nutrition evaluation team as outstanding in the region in the implementation of its nutrition action plan for three consecutive years.

Mayor Medina noted that the city had been adjudged as outstanding nutrition program implementor in Region 1 for three consecutive years covering 2009, 2010 and 2011.

To sustain its outstanding nutrition program implementation, Vigan City has lined up various long term programs such as search for best school in a garden, search for the most nutri-functional school canteen, intensive information education campaigns on significance of nutrition and health lifestyle through tri-media, feeding programs for pre-schoolers, massive backyard and school gardening and container gardening, evaluation of nutritional status of secondary school children, elementary and day care, strengthening of barangay nutrition council, mother class for healthy lifestyle, operation K2/shampoo day/hygiene day, search for the barangay with best nutrition practices;

Search for outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS), hataw sa barangay, monthly spot inspection of food handlers, hydroponic gardening for parents of malnourished children, simultaneous breastfeeding, search for barangay with best vegetable garden, pagsapulan raniag masakbayan, and batang Bigueno, lalaking Bibo.

In the initial impact of the nutrition programs’ implementation in Vigan City; it showed the city’s continous reduction in the prevalence of malnutrition among preschool chidren from 4.2 percent in 2010 to 3.77 percent in 2011.

She concluded that the city government has strengthens the implementation of its various nutrition programs in the coming years to attain their zero malnutrition incidence targets. #
