VIGAN CITY – This city hosted a two-day summit on disaster risk reduction management which was held at Baluarte on August 29 and 30.
Organized by the Office of the Civil Defense in the Ilocos, this gathering billed as Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Summit, brought together Ilocos mayors, governors and their DRRM officers including member-agencies of the regional management council.
Melchito Castro, OCD regional director, said that the chief executives reviewed and refreshed their roles in disaster response and management in the summit.
Castro said that the participants learned from the experiences of select local DRRMCs and identify challenges in their own councils.
They were also given tools and means of action which they can incorporate in their local disaster action plans, he added.
Usec Jose Mari Oquiñena, Philippine Information Agency Director General, gave an inspirational message in relation to the event’s theme.
The summit’s highlight included a commitment signing by chief executives to respond responsibly at all times during disasters and to provide accountable and transparent management of DRRM resources. (With report of Joanne Namnama G. Parrocha, PIA 1, La Union)
