Vigan City officials set their sight on Nutrition Honor Awar

VIGAN CITY – For having maintained the Green Banner Award for three consecutive years, Vigan City was adjudged as the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Award last year.

This grand slam was achieved by the city government through  its innovative programs on nutrition, proactive Barangay Nutrition Scholars and active participation of the City Nutrition Committee (CNC) led by Vigan City Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina.

For the record, this city has been the Green Banner Awardee in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The city officials however are not resting on their laurels. They have set their sight on a higher and more prestigious award: the Nutrition Honor Award (NHA).

To achieve this, the city government of Vigan must sustain the CROWN Award for another three years.

But the city officials are not unfazed. They vowed to leave no stones unturned to get this “mother of all nutrition awards”.

For this purpose, last June 10-14, 2013,  the National Nutrition Evaluation Team (NNET) visited Vigan City to validate its performance for the first year maintenance of the CROWN Award.

The validation team led by Jasmine Anne DF. Tandingan of the National Nutrition Council, with Assistant Secretary Myrna Clara B. Asuncion and  Maureen Ann D. Papa of National Economic Development Authority focused their assessment on the  efficiency and effectiveness of the local level plan implementation for the year 2012.

The City’s nutrition program is geared towards decreasing the prevalence of malnutrition through activities that focus on proper nutrition and care of children in particular and the whole populace in general. With the City Health Office (CHO) entering into a partnership with the Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) that included the CARITAS, Rotary Club of Vigan and Nueva Segovia Consortium, the team noted remarkable results in these joint undertakings.

OIC–NPC Rose Lulu P. Pagaduan and NO II Ethelreina A. Balisnomo with the members of the CNC accompanied the NNET who visited five sampled barangays namely Ayusan Norte, Baracca, San Julian Norte, Cabaroan Daya and Bulala.  Site visitations were also done to validate the various projects/programs of the city.

The city government expects to receive the result of the validation visit this September.

Mayor Medina said she is hoping Vigan City will qualify for the 1st CROWN Maintenance Award.#
