VIGAN CITY – Vigan was inaugurated on Thursday night (May 7) as the New7wonders cities of the world in the presence of Bernard Weber, the the global campaign’s founder-president, who flew to the country and presented a commemorative plaque to the Vigan community.
Weber awarded to Vigan Mayor Eva Marie Medina, the specially-commissioned bronze plaque cast in the Kunstigieberei Munchen, a famous foundry in Munich, Germany, where metal becomes memory using a combination of art and craft that dates back to ancient times.
According to the New7Wonders website, Weber took part in all stages of making the plaque – from design, casting and the application of the patina finish.
Observing the foundry proprietor Hasan Goktepe at work, he said the cast plaque got its color and is brought to life because Hasan followed the sequence of steps in making it.
Weber congratulated the residents for uniting to bring their city in the global map.
He noted that from the over 1,200 nominees from over 220 countries, Vigan struggled to become one of the top 77. On October 21, 2013, Vigan landed on top 28 and fought its way in three phases until it was announced as one of the seven on December 7, 2014.
He urged locals to continue preserving their rich, unique culture and heritage as a means to further develop their city and maintain its status as a world wonder city.
Weber also urged residents to upload their photos taken during the city’s journey in the campaign for New 7 Wonders Cities in the official website.
He said the pictures will be part of the heritage of the New 7 Wonders, virtual documents of how people unite in helping their city become recognized globally.
The other six cities to be inaugurated are Beirut of Lebanon, Doha of Qatar, Durban of South Africa, Havana of Cuba, Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia, and La Paz of Bolivia.
Medina said Vigan is far little and less developed than the other cities.
Weber said that the New 7 Wonders Cities will be a ‘forum for discussing everything from urban planning to metropolitan governance, from tourism to architecture,’ when he launched the campaign in 2012. The top seven were chosen from the votes all over the world so that ‘votes were cast and took democracy to a new, global level.’
Also present during the inauguration were Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senator Nancy Villar, New 7 Wonders executive director John Paul Marie de la Fuente, Indonesian N7W official, the kins of the late President Elpidio Quirino led by Cory Quirino, former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis ‘Chavit’ Singson, Governor Ryan Luis V Singson, Vice Governor Deogracias Victor Savellano, Congressmen Ronald Singson, Eric Singson, Sherwin Gatchalian.#
