VIGAN CITY – The city government of Vigan had set all its facilities to accommodate the athletes and visitors for the conduct of 2018 Palarong Pambansa from April 15-21 here.
At least 15,000 delegates are expected to attend the annual national sports event that will be hosted by the provincial government of Ilocos Sur. The main venue of the sports tournament is the newly refurbished President Quirino Stadium in Bantay town – an adjacent municipality from Vigan City.
Vigan City Mayor Juan Carlo S. Medina told the formulation of a contingency plan by the city government to ensure the safe accommodation of all athletes, delegates, and visitors of the tournament.
As of press time, the hotels’ accommodations in Vigan City for the Palarong Pambansa are already fully booked.
According to Mayor Medina, the delegates of the Palaro have already made a reservation in all hotels in the province particularly located from Candon City to Sinait towns in Ilocos Sur up to Currimao, Ilocos Norte.
“I’m calling all the owners of transient houses in Vigan City to open their establishment for the accommodation of the delegates of the 2018 Palarong Pambansa. This national sporting event, which is the very first time to be hosted by the provincial government, will bring great opportunities to all of us and let’s help one another for the success of this event in Ilocos Sur,” Mayor Medina said.
Earlier, at least 700 athletes from Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCSARGEN and ARMM have already arrived in Vigan City to familiarize the venues of the event and to adjust themselves to the prevailing weather in the province. These athletes have been billeted in the classrooms of Vigan Central School and other schools in Vigan City.
To maintain the cleanliness and sanitation during the tournament, Medina said that several trucks are deployed daily in all towns where the delegates are accommodated and at the sports venues, to collect garbage. The garbages collected will be dumped in the Vigan sanitary landfill.
The city government had also prepared three parking areas of vehicles that carry the delegates from their accommodation to the venues of the event. These parking areas are located in the Vigan Carnaval Ground in Barangay 4, Vigan City; parade ground of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP); and the vacant ground at the back of the Vigan Conservation Complex.
“We are expecting at least 240 buses that will ferry the athletes of the tournament excluding the hundreds of vans from the billeting schools and hotels to Vigan City and Bantay town in which at least 15 buses per region are expected to arrive. Thus, we prepared these three parking areas for the convenience of the traffic during the event,” said Medina. (ajc/FGL/PIA-1)
