Vice President Jejomar C. Binay celebrated his birthday on Friday, November 11 – or “11-11-11”- with a boodle fight with 1,111 Marine and Navy personnel at the Marines headquarters in Fort Bonifacio.
Binay is a reservist colonel in the Marines.
The boodle fight was followed by the awarding of financial assistance from the Alay sa Kawal (ASK) Foundation, which Binay chairs, to families of 69 marines who were killed in action.
The Vice President said he intends to celebrate his next birthdays with the military.
“This is my way of thanking our men in uniform for their service to our country, and expressing not only my personal gratitude but the gratitude of the government and the people,” he said.
Established in 1986, ASK is the oldest non-governmental organization devoted to the welfare of enlisted personnel in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Binay previously distributed P30,000 each to 53 dependents of 49 soldiers who were killed and four who were seriously wounded in action in May. He distributed another P30,000 each to 49 widows at Camp Edilberto Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro City in September.
“As a reservist, I understand the sacrifices our soldiers make in service to our country. Their bravery deserves to be recognized,” Binay said.
Moreover, the Vice President, who is also the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) chair, recently announced the Phase 2 of the AFP/PNP Housing Program in the Visayas and Mindanao.
He said that the government has allotted a budget of P3.5 billion for military and police housing.#
