Year of the Metal Ox and 2021 pandemic predictions

Hello, 2021!

What’s store for us from you in this Year of the Metal Ox?

That’s correct, fellas.

Year 2021 is Year of the Ox starting from February 12th, 2021 (Chinese lunar New Year Day) and lasting until January 30th, 2022. It will be a Metal Ox year. Famous (or notorious?) Ox people include Barack Obama, Vincent Van Gogh, Adolf Hitler, Walt Disney, Jane Fonda, Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher.

There are 5 kinds of oxen:

Wood Ox (1925, 1985)–Restless, decisive, straightforward and always ready to defend the weak and helpless

Fire Ox (1937, 1997)–Short-sighted, selfish, narrow-minded, impersonal but practical

Earth Ox (1949, 2009)–Honest and prudent, with a strong sense of responsibility

Gold Ox (1961, 2021)–Hardworking, active, always busy and popular among friends

Water Ox (1913, 1973)–Hardworking, ambitious, tenacious, and able to endure hardship, with strong sense of justice and keen observational abilities

If you are an Ox, be aware of these lucky and unlucky things: Lucky numbers: 1, 4, and numbers containing 1 and 4 (like 14 and 41); Lucky days: the 13th and 27th of every Chinese lunar months; Lucky colors: white, yellow, and green; Lucky flowers: tulip, morning glory, and peach blossom; Lucky direction: north and south; Lucky months: the 7th and 9th Chinese lunar months;

Here are the things that Oxen should avoid: Unlucky color: blue; Unlucky numbers: 5 and 6; Unlucky direction: southwest; Unlucky months: the 4th and 11th Chinese lunar months.

Oxen are honest and dependable and are known for their diligence, strength and determination. These reflect traditional conservative characteristics. Male Oxen are strongly patriotic, have ideals and ambitions for life and attach importance to family and work. Women Oxen are traditional and faithful wives, who attach great importance to their children’s education. Ox people are not good at communicating with others, so they have less social intercourse. They prefer to stay alone and enjoy solitude instead of participating in group activities. They treat friends sincerely and count much on friendship. For love relationships, Oxen tend to keep a long-term relationship with their lovers. Frequent changes of lover make them uncomfortable. Ladies of the Ox zodiac sign lack femininity. If they can realize their inadequacies, and change their cautious attitude of indifference to affection and enthusiasm, they will have love relationships to their hearts’ desire.

How about pandemic predictions this 2021, fellas?

Experts see these things as 60% probability: Globalized travel and tourism will not return in 2021. Many industries will continue to suffer. Those suffering from chronic illness and cancer will continue to be at a disadvantage in hospitals because they won’t receive adequate care due to COVID-19. Telemedicine will be the norm as it will be difficult to see a doctor in person. Home lab tests are coming. Prepare for more e-sports and relatively strict limits on live sports and cultural events.

Will vaccines be available worldwide? Thirty % of experts say so. According to this scenario, we’ll have a vaccine by the end of 2020. This extremely optimistic version is calculating with hundreds of millions of shots available, vaccinating the most important groups (healthcare workers/over-65ers/people with other medical conditions) within a matter of months – and we’ll have the second part of 2021 for ourselves to make up for 2020. Upon reckoning with moderate optimism, several vaccines will go through the final phase during the first couple of months of 2021. Within a few more months, mass production begins and results in hundreds of millions of doses available for distribution. Then, led by the WHO, we will start vaccinating those who need to get it first.

Casey Drake predicts: “The first round of global vaccination will take several months. If the vaccine needs repetition like the flu shot, by the time that it’s done, the next round of vaccination may begin. Everyone considers a successful vaccine trial to put an end to the pandemic, but it won’t. Even with this cautiously optimistic scenario, I expect 2021 to be pretty similar to 2020: masks, social distancing, hand washing and limited travel. This means that our everyday life and thinking will be interwoven with the epidemic as a whole in 2021.”

Chris Ware adds: “In my pessimistic version, I am going to give a gloomy take on 2021 as well, simply because this cannot be ruled out entirely. According to this model, there will be reliably safe vaccines (tested definitely on more than those 70 people as in Russia) by mid-2021. It’ll take many months to vaccinate the ones in need; vaccination of the wider population is yet impossible due to distribution and delivery issues. In other words, expect multiple waves of the virus throughout 2021. Wearing masks will remain compulsory across the globe for years to come. Sometime around 2022-23, we’ll reach the level of The New Normal.”

Locally we still have 1000+ infections a day and has spread in the communities when the lockdowns were eased. In fact Christmas and New Year to some barangays in the Ilocos provinces are now characterized by local lockdowns brought about by local transmissions by APORs (Authorized Persons Outside Residence,) comebacking OFWs and people coming from high-risk areas.

Local health experts predict that the pandemic will get worse before it gets better and will continue to be a threat at least through 2021.

So what’s in for us, fellas?

Nothing should change, instead, we should be more cautious. Religiously wear your face mask, avoid crowded areas, maintain physical distancing, wash your hands frequently and observe a healthy lifestyle to boost your immune system.

With these, we welcome 2021, the Year of the Metal Ox.

Stay healthy, fellas.

Happy New Year!
